More than 50 years, the United States has maintained a large military force, primarily comprising Army and Air Force units.
In the Spring of 1945 they arrived in overwhelming numbers - combat and support troops. It was originally envisioned that the American forces in Germany would carry out their occupation role and eventually disband and return home. However, changing the political events in the post-war world altered that plan.
The US Army units are now located in Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Italy.
